Sylvia Kang is Chief Real Estate Officer at Quantum Loophole. She brings more than 15 years of experience in site selection, energy and lease contract negotiations, financial analytical modeling and energy management to her current role.
At Quantum Loophole, Sylvia leads international and domestic data center site selection, capacity procurement and energy management. Her strategic oversight is critical to driving Quantum Loophole’s disruptive, first-of-its-kind gigawatt-scale, master plan data center city development approach that leverages environmental sustainability at its core. With experience hailing from Cyrus One, Microsoft, and Yahoo! combined with previous experience from PriceWaterhouseCoopers and KPMG, her consultative approach and understanding of the complexities to high-stakes decision making, positions her strengths effectively both internally and externally with clients. Sylvia’s energy, commitment, and excellence show consistently in the engagement and respect she both offers and earns every day.
Throughout her career, Sylvia has led teams to drive tens of millions of dollars in data center development cost savings. She has negotiated a multitude of data center service agreements, single-tenant and wholesale capacity leases and was a key driver behind industry-leading legislative changes.
Prior to joining Quantum Loophole, Sylvia served as Vice President of Site Selection and Acquisition for Cyrus One where she led the evaluation, recommendation and acquisition of portfolio data center sites that are designed, constructed and operated to drive the lowest total cost of ownership. While serving in this capacity, Sylvia drove Texas and Arizona legislative changes for data center infrastructure and equipment and other proprietary incentives.
While at Microsoft, Sylvia served in a pioneering role to develop the data center analytics team. She implemented the adoption of a single consistent methodology to evaluate the company’s global data center portfolio; established a competitive philosophy of lease vs. build analytics to drive build costs lower; and created and implemented a total cost of ownership model to evaluate site selections, equipment selections and design options.
Before entering the data center profession, Sylvia spent over a decade as a tax advisor with seven years in state and local tax practices at PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and KPMG. As a result of her role and experiences at PwC and KPMG, Sylvia has helped pass data center favorable legislation in over 10 states.
Passionate about cost analytics and value engineering data center designs, Sylvia’s name in the industry is now synonymous with the development of intelligent, leading-edge processes for data center site selection with careful integration of civil, utility, engineering, tax, finance and legal requirements.
Sylvia’s accomplishments serve as an inspiration to young women everywhere who are interested in pursuing STEM fields as well as serving in executive leadership roles while also achieving work-life balance. When she is not driving lower TCO data center site solutions, you will find her snowboarding or skiing in Tahoe with her daughter, Taylor.
